It has been a long time, friends! I’ve been silent because I wasn’t sure how I was going to use this platform as the world began to open back up and life and art making got busy. But I’m once again entering a period focused on creating and generating new work. Which is what I love best. Because this phase is where I feel most free to experiment and play around and see where the work takes me. I love this process and journey. It’s what gets me excited! Even though, this process is fraught with moments where I have no idea what I’m doing. :)
In this new work, I’m mining the work I already shared with you here on MOULTING. I wonder if I will spend the rest of my life returning to the initial work I created here? I find I can always dig deeper and find new meaning. Sometimes, returning to old material helps me to see it in a new light and find new material that was previously hidden to me.
I’m returning to my obsession with the SunYeo from MOULTING, No.3. You can read the backstory here and the actual poem and sculpture here.
Except now the work is expanding into a performance art! If you had told me 10 years ago that I would start performing my art, I might have snorted and given you a look of disbelief.
Performance is a call for everyone to look at me. Never been my thing. But that’s quickly changing, all in the name of art. I’m shedding this old skin and growing a shiny new one. Inserting my body into my work.
At the same time, if I look back on my journey, I see the signposts, all pointing towards the work becoming performative. I am simply owning it now and stepping firmly and surely into the shoes of a performance artist.
I just finished sewing my costume for the role of the SunYeo. Here I am, testing it out:
I love wearing this hanbok-inspired dress!!😂 It makes me feel like I can fly! I kept some of the traditional hanbok elements, but severely simplified it and modernized it, for the purposes of my performance. Plus, I’d have to receive massive training to make a traditional hanbok! Also, the sleeves were inspired by the men’s hanbok.
What do you think??
More photos coming soon…
I will continue to use this platform to share my works in progress. Hope you’ll continue to journey with me!
I do have a performance coming up in May in the Boston area where I will present an initial look at the performance work I’m creating for the SunYeo. If you are local and would like to receive information about opportunities to see my work, please sign up for my emails here. (I won’t inundate you with those announcements on this platform.)
